EV F150 Lightning Owner Review

“After 2.5 weeks of owning the truck, I have gotten a good mix of in-town commuting, highway driving and towing our tent trailer. Ford has done an amazing job of making it feel exactly like a gas F-150 in the steering, handling, and general driving feel, but is faster, quieter and smoother  (due to the independent rear suspension). On my first weekend with the truck I attended a Father’s Day car show and showed the truck. The reception to the truck was very positive and the “frunk” was a magnet.

 

The efficiency is surprisingly good. Based on the driving I have done so far, I get about 600km city driving, 440km highway driving (unladen), and 330km towing at highway speed with our tent trailer. I’m personally really happy with that as it’ll easily get us to Jasper, Drumheller, etc. Obviously the truck tows exceptionally well, but only getting a 25% reduction in range was a very pleasant surprise.

I’ve have 1 trip from Edmonton to Calgary. The 274km trip used 61% of my battery. I stopped twice at a 150kW charging station in North Calgary. the first stop was an 11 minute bathroom break that charged the truck up 17%, and after our meeting we stopped at the same charger. This stop was for dinner and was 27 minutes, which got us 35% battery and charged the truck up to 83%. The truck estimated I would have 23% when I got back home, and I arrived with 21%, so pretty good accuracy.

Overall the truck has been fantastic. Being an experienced EV owner and after owning 2 Teslas, I have been pleasantly surprised with how good Ford has done with this truck. There are a number of software improvements Ford can make to improve customer satisfaction, they are easy fixes, like being able to adjust the amps while charging, and being able to see how many kWs your charging at.
