Earth Day is on April 22 and this article on how Ford is reducing its waste and environmental footprint is impressive and interesting. This article is from the Ford Media Centre.
We are serious about reducing waste at Ford. The company is not just focused on making great cars, trucks and SUVs, it’s also striving to making sure it leaves as small an environmental footprint as possible.
Thanks to the commitment and dedication of employees across North America, we are pleased to announce that all three of our North American headquarters facilities send zero waste to landfills. That’s 240,000 pounds, over 120 tons of garbage that will not find its way into dumps.
This incredible milestone was made possible in under two years, thanks to the diligence of Ford employees and the implementation of a number of sustainable practices:
· An aggressive recycling program was instituted and employees separated waste from recyclable materials whenever possible.
· In Mexico, food waste was converted to compost while in the United States and Canada, that refuse was sent to waste-to-energy facilities.
· Across all locations, more environmentally-friendly food containers were made available in cafeterias, reducing overall waste levels.
“Our global waste strategy commits Ford to reducing waste to landfills, and we have made great progress at our headquarters, manufacturing plants, offices and research facilities,” said Andy Hobbs, Ford Motor Company director, Environmental Quality Office. “We are proud of the efforts of our employees worldwide in their commitment to helping Ford reduce its environmental footprint.”
It’s our latest victory for planet Earth made possible thanks to the Ford sustainability strategy. In addition to reducing or eliminating the amount of waste sent to landfills, the company has been making incredible strides to implement a whole host of environmentally responsible practices. Ford has cut global water use by over 30 percent compared to a 2009 benchmark and is on track to cut its global energy consumption by 25 percent by the end of this year.
Join us in giving the employees of the Dearborn, Michigan, Oakville, Ontario, and Santa Fe, Mexico, headquarters a green thumbs-up for their hard work!
