Crunching the Numbers

Timothy Cain at Driver.ca recently reported the domestic top sales for the first three quarters of 2022. His finding show a greater percentage of sales for North American vehicle manufacturers and a decrease in sales for Asian and European models (“Asian and European brands reported a collective 26-per-cent decrease worth nearly 80,000 lost sales”). He also found that one out of every five vehicles sold in Canada during 2022’s first nine months were full-size trucks.

Claiming the top spot for vehicle sales is Ford. Cain says “From 14.5 per cent prior to the pandemic, 14.9 per cent in 2020, and 14.2 per cent in 2021, Canada’s No.1-ranked automotive brand (Ford) now claims 15.4 per cent of all auto sales. Production capacity constraints simply aren’t hitting Detroit brands as hard, as evidenced by Ford’s 12-per-cent year-over-year surge in sales in the third-quarter. That summertime gain was fuelled by rising sales from the Mustang, Bronco, Bronco Sport, EcoSport, Explorer, Maverick, Mach-E, and all-conquering F-Series. If not already, Ford will have sold more vehicles by the end of October than any other brand will sell in the entirety of 2022. Ford has been Canada’s top-selling brand since 2009.”
